This is simply because you are not specifying it properly and are probably setting your self static, or configuring DNS incorrectly.
If you are completely dynamic you should get your domain info with the dhclient lease. Otherwise in your network.conf specify domains as DOMAINS="VC.shawcable.net" (substitute your VC with your area's code) - pinging will then work.
