Manfred,

Have the eth entries commented out and the bridge
entry uncommented in /etc/network/interfaces.  My 
poking around in if-pre-up.d/bridge has
/proc/net/dev empty (or with out any eth entries).
As a guess, this is because pcmcia either hasn't
run or isn't finished.  My gut tells me this is
the root of the problem.  Further poking around
confirms this as I see the bridge scripts exiting
before hearing the beeps (and messages) from pcmcia.
