Yup, I followed those instructions to a T as, I imagine, did stefan. It's
been a couple of weeks since I tried it now. All I remember is that every
thing seemed ok, ecxept that NT claimed it couldn't connect.

You do need to add some firewall entries -- see
http://www.shorewall.net/PPTP.htm.
