The vlan stuff is indeed undocumented but I would really welcome any 
initiative to complete the user's guide on this subject :-)
Here are the initial directions:
You need to load the 802.1q module to have vlan support in the kernel.
It's like any other module. Check the install guide.
The module (for rc3) is here:
