This is somewhat off-topic. I am just looking for some general guidance. I
know just enough about this stuff to be dangerous.
I've got Dachstein boxes at home and at work, both with cable connections
and 192.168.1.x networks behind them. I run fetchmail, procmail, postfix
and IMAP on the office server.
I have set the office firewall to allow IMAP from my home IP address, and
to forward it to the office server (192.168.1.210). I can access my office
IMAP server from home, using any mail client, to read and reply to mail.
However, when I reply from home, I use my ISP's SMTP server,
smtp.west.cox.net. This prevents me (I think) from sending an email message
from home directly to one of my co-workers at the office at their "local"
or "internal" email address (for example, jenn@[192.168.1.210].
It occurred to me that if I specified the office IP address as my SMTP
server for my home email client, then allowed and port forwarded SMTP
through the office Dachstein firewall to my office server, then I should be
able to send mail directly to co-workers at their "local" or "internal"
email address.
Am I thinking straight here? Thanks in advance.
