Thanks to all who weighed in on my questions. I now have samba
configured
on my firewall to allow me to use it as a small file server. AS I
previously mentioned, my primary use for samba is to provide profile
storage
for multiple users running Netscape mail. I notice that when I tested
the
setup using a RedHat 8.0 box with a celery 400MHZ cpu and 128meg of ram
that
the file access was almost instant. My Bering box is a decent Pentium
200 @
225MHZ with 64 meg of ram. I really thought that cpu speed would not
play much
of a factor since disk access would be the limiting factor and be the
same
on both. I notice that when reading and deleting mail there is a bit of
a delay
on the bering box. I also see the collision lights flash some on the
small
desktop hub but only when accessing a samba share not when browsing.

My stats: cpu-225mhz, ram-64meg, nic bus - pci, nic type - genuine intel
ee100pro,
net speed - 100mbit, samba version 2.2.5

My questions:

1.Should the cpu speed make a difference?

2.Where should I look for the cause of the collisions.

3.Would a Cyrix MII 300 be a stable substitute for the Pentium 225?

Thanks,

Kory Krofft
