Interesting observations!

I have been working on a debian-based CF filesystem using cloop.  
I'll switch over to cramfs to see if it makes any differences.
Cramfs would be a better choice since that is the Debian choice
for its initrd.  I don't have to build the cloop module which is
not part of the standard kernel anyway.
