Hi Derek, This usually happens because you are using an incompatible version of UML Utilities. Here is the site to get the version you need: http://user-mode-linux.sourceforge.net/dl-sf.html. The trick here is to find the version that works. Try to choose the one that has the date code that is closest to the date code for the kernel patch that you are using.
If you are using kernel 2.4.18-45 try using uml_utilities_20020729.tar.bz2. If this does not work for you then it will be a matter of testing different UML utilities until you find the one that works for you. Best of luck and let us know how it turns out.
