You probably recently applied a service pack that changed the default behavior concerning ICMP redirects or something. MS is slowly getting a clue about proper TCP/IP networking...now if we could just get them to pull their heads out of the sand regarding proper TCP window scaling, Path MTU discovery, broadcast traffic, etc... :)Thanks Charles!!I had my leaf firewall set as the default GW, and had always managed routing thru it. Blame it on MS, but I had this config for almost a year with no redirect problems at all.
On my windows systems, I always just use the "route" command at the command line. I'm not sure if there's a gui front-end for this or not, or where you'd find it if there is. A few notes from the Win2K help file (under adding a static route) for Win2K server, which has more info than the standard workstation help file:The static route to 192.168.3/24 is set on the leaf server (Dachstein 1.02 CD) Are you (anyone) aware of changes on how routing is managed on W2K since SP3?? 192.168.1.24 is a W2K server just installed, and the only "change" seems to be W2K SP3 applied!! Thanks anyway. Now I know what I'm looking for!!
To make a static route persistent, you can either enter route add commands in a batch file that is run during system startup or use the p option when adding routes.
Routes added by using the p option are stored in the Windows 2000 registry under the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\PersistentRoutes
NOTE: You don't *HAVE* to add a static route to your windows box. It's perfectly OK to have your PDC send packets to the firewall, which then forwards them to the Vanguard (just a bit inefficent since packets hit the same cable twice). In this case, you'd probably want to disable the sending of ICMP redirects by the router (configurable via proc/something ... see the kernel Documentation files), or otherwise disable logging of the redirect failures.
