For now I'll mess around with the MASQ timeout setting and see where that gets me.
Good idea. If you're running out of masq ports, this should help the problem, although if your buddie's peer-peer app is *really* seeing a lot of unique connections, even this might not solve your problems.
Other than lowering the MASQ timeouts, if you really are running out of masq ports, the only other option is to increase the port range used by the masquerade code. IIRC, this is a compile time option, so you'll be building your own kernel.
Look for ip_masq.h, which contains start and end ports for the masquerade range. You may also have to tweak ip_masq.c if you use more than than the default 4096 ports, but I'm not sure.
