The is the update: Now web server is accessible from the outside.
Since I tried both Rays and Greg's suggestions I will have to put them
on one at a time to figure out which one did the trick. If it was the
ipchains cmd that did it, I can't understand since the same input chain
rule was already present (see below).
I am still curious if anyone can explain why I cannot use the external
IP address 216.12.yy.xx in a web browser on an internal machine to reach
the web server.
My understanding, from a presentation I found on the web, is that the
linux routing process is:
Input_from_Iface ----> PreRouting ---> routing <---> Input
| |
V V
Forward (This machine)
| |
V V
Output_to_iface <---- PostRouting <-------------- Output
Where Input, Forward and Output are the names of the respective chains
under the iptables architecture.
(Don't quite know what pre-routing and post-routing mean in this
context.)
Thanks all in advance.
Rick.

Subject: Re Web server available Direct but not behind Dachstein
Thanks Ray and Greg for your responses.
I am including some additional information about symptoms from inside
internal net. I will try from work again tomorrow.>>>
I tried what Ray suggested:
EXTERN_TCP_PORT0 "0/0 www"
instead of
EXTERN_TCP_PORT0 "0/0 www 192.168.x.y/24"
made no difference to symptoms from inside the internal network. (Again,
will try from work tomorrow.)
Then I added the ipchains command that Greg suggested. (Actually a
second one to allow access from the internal interface eth1 as well)
Still from the inside, I can point my browser to the internal IP of the
W2003 server, and the web page is fine. If I point the browser to the
external IP I get, and I quote: Cannot find server or DNS Error Internet
Explorer
Should'nt the port forwarding take any port 80 request directed to the
external IP address and forward it to the INTERN_WWW_SERVER regardless
of what interface it comes in on? Maybe I am naive about this and
should not be surprised
that port forward won't work from inside the internal net. Anybody know
why it wouldn't?
Config in network.conf is now:
CONFIGDNS=YES
eth0_IPADDR = <static ip>
eth0_MASKLEN=26
EXTERN_DHCP=NO
EXTERN_TCP_PORT0 "0/0 www"
INTERNAL_WWW_SERVER=192.168.x.y
(For Ray's benefit, everything that should be CAPs was.)
I would love to give you my entire network.conf file, but I don't quite
know how to transfer that to this win2k client.
The input, forward & output chains are reproduced below, as well as port
forwarding.
