Really wouldn't matter, just yet, that ping isn't enabled. If he has no link light from the LEAF box on his switch/hub, and no light on the networking card, then there's an issue that's lower than Layer 3 (IP), and probably an issue at Layer 1 (Physical).

After he figures out the reason he doesn't have link, then yeah, the firewall issue with ICMP comes into play. :)
