I added the list in.
I built a few Bering dialout boxes for others - worked reliably for 2 years. I have used both internal and external modems. If internal - use an ISA modem - not pci - that are almost always software modems. I
prefer the external modems that you can still find occsionally for about
$15 but you need to use a box with a serail port based on the 16550 chip. Use com 2 - that has a higher interupt preference than com 1. Com 2 is ttyS1 in the ppp setup files.
.
I use the following active filter line in /etc/ppp/options
active-filter 'not(icmp[0]=0 or icmp[0]=3 or icmp[0]=8 or port 135 or port 137 or port 139 or port 445)'

OK, so pci software modems are Windows only? Doesn't really matter, I've found an external RS232 modem: http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/hardware/modemsandadslhardware/productVi ew.htm?quicklinx=14XF
Is this suitable? Not quite $15, but still cheap. Hmm, I always assumed all machines use the 16550. It's a very old P75 box, is there any way to check using Bering which chip it is? Or do I have to just hunt around on the mobo?
Also, can anybody explain to me the high level process of how ppp knows when to dial and when to hang up? This box will be in the loft with the rest of the network and will be used by my parents. I'm hoping this can be al made automatic?
I'm scouring the HOWTOs, not managed to find an answer yet.
Thanks,
James.
You should be able to tell from the BIOS but you can also use the leaf floppy
Boot the floppy on the box - enable ppp in leaf.cfg enable the ppp modules in modules backup both
reboot
more /var/log/messages you should see a line like
kernel: ttys01 at 0x02f8 9 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
