Pardon my ignorance if it is shown but doesn't Hostap require a prism2 based card? Is your DWL card such a beast? If not I do not like your chances. I have an old WL200 doing just what you want to do and its working well with this setup, pcmcia and hostap on Bering Uclibc 2.0 (I think!)
