Mostly CF writers are connected using USB. In the WRAP the CF is connected to a IDE interface. If your VMware instance can boot from a USB device _and_ you have the respective drivers in your initrd _and_ you set up the package path to point to your USB connected CF I would think this could be done. You still would not be able to test the IDE package path though, but this is just a little modification in your boot loader configuration. When I changed to using GRUB I felt this kind of modification was easier to make and maintain than with syslinux.
