No need to run it every minute, the standard resolution is 5 minutes
anyway. Use the RRD interface in mrtg though.

You may also want to look at smokeping, I feel network latency graphing
is a valuable tool to see how your network behaves.

Another tool to look at is cacti. I have not played with it yet it
definitely looks cool
