Art, what can I say - you're a  hero!
It was as you said - I needed the correct initrd for the cf. The reason 
why the floppy saw /dev/hda1, but not the cf, was that I had the 
correct, renamed initrd on the floppy, but not on the cf.

I'm now off to try upgrading to beta3!
