Hi there. I've been upgrading from 2.4.2 to 3.0.2 and ran into
something a bit odd. (Actually a few things, but I will post them
separate, as I think that'll make for cleaner responses.)

The ISO image for CD for 2.4.2 had a complete unpacked tree of modules
available. This allowed me to edit /etc/modules and use syntax like
this:

### local customizations

### Ethernet drivers
crc32
! mount iso9660 /dev/cdrom

! dir /lib/modules/2.4.32/kernel/drivers/net
sis900
3c59x

### QoS
! dir /lib/modules/2.4.32/kernel/net/sched
cls_fw
cls_route
cls_rsvp
cls_rsvp6
cls_tcindex
cls_u32
sch_cbq
sch_csz
sch_dsmark
sch_gred
sch_hfsc
sch_htb
sch_ingress
sch_netem
sch_prio
sch_red
sch_sfq
sch_tbf
sch_teql

! umount

The nice thing about this is that the cdrom loads more quickly. It
also strikes me as more secure, given the read only nature of the
cdrom. (The floppy can be write protected, but obviously someone
could modify it more easily.)

With 3.0.2 I could only find a gzipped tarfile of the modules. I have
to unpack this somewhere, copy the modules to /lib/modules, and then
back up the modules to floppy to create moddb.lrp. As you might
imagine, with my long list of modules above, that file is becoming
quite large and takes a while to load.

Any thoughts? Alternate approaches I'm missing?

Would it be possible to put the complete unpacked modules distribution
on 3.1.0? (I guess while I'm at it, any updates on when a production
3.1.0 might come out?)
