>1. Is there an exact formula to compute how much RAM, or how good a CPU i would need for a pc router?

So far i haven't seen any dropped packets at the company's router, but i have some nagging suspicions that it's slowing us down. One thing to look at is "ip -s link show" which will show you any errors on your network interfaces. If you are getting errors there, that would appear to you as the router slowing you down. How much RAM and CPU depends on the application. I think if you describe what you are doing with the router, how big the rule set is, how fast the connections are, etc, someone on this list with similar experience could tell you if your machine is big enough. In my experience, the quality of the NICs and the system bus seems to be more important than a blazing fast CPU. RAM depends on what packages you are loading, and to some extent on how many connections you are tracking. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- SF.Net email is sponsored by: Check out the new SourceForge.net Marketplace.
