Hello Marvin, if you want compact devices with low power consumption you can look at PC Engines ALIX or Soekris boards. (These two series are the only ones _I_ know. There might be others.) PC Engines ALIX boards are cheaper than Soekris boards, at least here in Germany. I think both have 10/100 ethernet only. ALIX boards are available with up to 3 ethernet ports. Maybe you can add a 4th port using Mini-PCI. For Soekris there is an extension card available that adds 4 more ports. Some time ago I replaced an old system with a WRAP board (predecessor of ALIX) in the matching case with a 233 MHz Geode CPU, 128 MB RAM and a Compact Flash card as boot drive. It runs as a DSL internet router, OpenSWAN VPN router, firewall and DNS proxy/DHCP server for one small internal network. This small device does not produce any noticeable heat. In contrast to this my 8-port gigabit ethernet switch gets fairly warm. ALIX boards are available with 500 MHz CPU and 256 MB RAM.
