Tried that too with hardware and/or software flow control 
on/on,on/off,off/on,off/off. Didn't work. In fact, tried to make it work for 
more than five hours. One thing I should mention is that I am using a SYBA 
SY-SATA2CF CF to SATA Adapter, like this one:

The PuTTY configuration I am using:
Speed(baud)=38400, 
Data bits=8, 
Stop bits=1, 
Parity=None, and
Flow control=None
