Sorry, I was looking at the wrong logs earlier.

I see lines such as these when the machine boots without reading the 
flash drive properly:

usb.c: USB device not accepting new address=3 (error=-110)
usb.c: USB device not accepting new address=4 (error=-110)


I'll be researching this but if anyone has an idea I'd love to hear it.
