After a long time of silence the LEAF Bering-uClibc team announces the
first beta version of LEAF Bering-uClibc 4.0.

Bering-uClibc 4.0 is basically Bering-uClibc 3.x brought up to date
with the latest versions of the main software components. But the most
important changes are:
- The Linux kernel is upgraded from 2.4.x to 2.6.x.
- The uClibc library is upgraded from 0.9.28 to 0.9.30.
- Upgrade of shorewall to the perl-based current version incl. shorewall6.

Obviously an easy upgrade path can't be provided - we're sorry for
that.

These changes bring both advantages and disadvantages compared to
Bering-uClibc 3.x. The main disadvantage is that the distribution is much
larger which means it no longer has any chance of being hosted on floppy
disk media. The main advantages are:

- Hardware-specific kernel module loading has been partially automated,
resulting in less of a requirement to understand which combination of
modules is required on a particular hardware platform.
- The upgraded version of Shorewall requires a full installation of the
Perl interpreter. This makes it possible to run other services which
  require Perl.
- Proper stateful connection tracking for IPv6 is only supported from
  kernel version 2.6.24 onwards.

As important as the software and infrastructure work (see below) looks
like, even more we appreciate to welcome new developers, who signed for the
biggest tasks moving LEAF Bering-uClibc forward. Namely Andrew, who became
lead developer for the kernel, uclibc and all the related hard stuff and
DavidMBrooke, who mainly worked on (building) the new images and moving the
documentation to mediawiki.

Work on Bering-uClibc 4.x started in April 2010, with Andrew as the lead
developer and contributions from kapeka, Erich Titl and davidMbrooke among
others. The development was mostly completed beginning November 2010, with
multiple Alpha test systems "in production" for weeks. So it can't be that
bad :)

For bug reports, requests, etc. please use the new TRAC interface:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/leaf/

Please let us know if you run into issues using TRAC.

The documentation has been moved to mediawiki:
https://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/leaf/index.php?title=Main_Page

The documentation is still work in progress, though it's a lot easier to
maintain current documentation and create new chapters/pages than before -
feel free to help improving it.

This first version after that major changes has some shortcomings:

.x_-_Known_Issues

for currently known issues.

We know that saying goodbye to the floppy version may hurt, on the other
hand we provide new images that has been optimized for different
architectures:

Bering-uClibc_4.0-beta1_geode_syslinux_ser.tar.gz - optimized for Geode
CPU and seriell interface (e.g. ALIX Boards)

Bering-uClibc_4.0-beta1_i686_isolinux_vga.iso - CD image optimized for
i686 CPU with VGA interface

Bering-uClibc_4.0-beta1_i486_isolinux_vga.iso - CD image optimized for
i486 CPU with VGA interface

Bering-uClibc_4.0-beta1_i686_syslinux_vga.tar.gz - optimized for i686 CPU
with VGA interface to load from hd/cf

Bering-uClibc_4.0-beta1_i486_syslinux_vga.tar.gz - optimized for i486 CPU
with VGA interface to load from hd/cf

Bering-uClibc_4.0-beta1_src.tar - the complete sources tarball (as
required by SF)
