Have a look at the leaf documentation at:
http://leaf.sourceforge.net/doc/
particularly Chapter 11 in the Bering uClib 3.x installation guide titled

11. Using Bering-uClibc with an IDE harddisk or CD-ROM drive

check each step, read the man pages or google the commands to find out what
they do. When it is clear in your head, try it. Some of the other user
guides also more information or present it in a different way, read them too.

I learned a great deal about the linux boot process and how disks, hardware
and file systems work from studying leaf. Sometimes it was easy, sometimes it
took a long time. Now I copy partitions, install boot loaders etc comfortably
on all types of systems. I tried the syslinux command for years and it never
worked, one day I found the correct parameter to use in the man pages, it
worked and I understand it. Linux is like that, most times the answer is
there, right under your nose, but you have to be familiar with it for it to
make sense.

Start with a separate computer - you will probably wipe the disk at least
once! Start with a small number of packages and add what you need when you
get the basic router/firewall working.

Good luck

Marko
