I don't think it is syslinux. A couple of suggestions on the wiki http://bering-uclibc.zetam.org/wiki/Bering-uClibc_5.x_-_User_Guide_-_Basic_Configuration_-_Booting_for_the_First_Time In syslinux.cfg APPEND reboot=bios usb_wait=3 or APPEND libata.dma=0 For me, newer compact flash can fail to boot, while older ones work.
