Try putting a $ symbol for the 12.41 amount:

2017/01/01 Example
    Assets:Mutual Fund              1,409.443 ABCfund @ $12.41
    Equity                        $-17,491.19

$ ledger -f test balance
   1,409.443 ABCfund  Assets:Mutual Fund
         $-17,491.19  Equity
--------------------
         $-17,491.19
   1,409.443 ABCfund
