Hi all,

I am confused on an aspect of Commodity trading, Balancing and Capital
Gains or Losses. I have gone over the manual a few times and I am hoping
someone can help clear up this confusion. Please feel free to point me to
documentation that explains this that I may have missed.

Here is a sample entry:

2018-07-01 * My Holdings
    Assets:Chequing 0.00 CAD
    Assets:Holdings:Stocks:TICKER 4000 TICKER @ 10.00 CAD
    Assets:Holdings:Stocks:TICKER 6000 TICKER @ 15.00 CAD
    Assets:Holdings:Cash 0.00 CAD
    Income:Capital Gains 0.00 CAD
    Equity:Opening Balances

So at some point in the past, I had purchased TICKER twice, once at 10.00
and once at 15.00 for a total value of $130,000.00 CAD which reflects fine
in ledger bal:
$ ledger -f ~/tmp/holdings.dat bal
        10000 TICKER Assets:Holdings:Stocks:TICKER
      -130000.00 CAD Equity:Opening Balances
--------------------
      -130000.00 CAD
        10000 TICKER

Now, I decide to sell all 10,000 TICKER at $5.00 (substantial loss I know
:/). Here is where I am confused. I tried 2 different ways:

Option1 in journal:
2018-07-01 * My Holdings
    Assets:Chequing 0.00 CAD
    Assets:Holdings:Stocks:TICKER 4000 TICKER @ 10.00 CAD
    Assets:Holdings:Stocks:TICKER 6000 TICKER @ 15.00 CAD
    Assets:Holdings:Cash 0.00 CAD
    Income:Capital Gains 0.00 CAD
    Equity:Opening Balances

2018-09-19 Stock Sell - TICKER
    Assets:Holdings:TICKER -4000 TICKER {10.00 CAD} @
5.00 CAD
    Assets:Holdings:TICKER -6000 TICKER {15.00 CAD} @
5.00 CAD
    Assets:Holdings:Cash

ledger -f ~/tmp/holdings.dat bal

       130000.00 CAD Assets:Holdings
       130000.00 CAD Cash
        10000 TICKER Stocks:TICKER
       -10000 TICKER TICKER
      -130000.00 CAD Equity:Opening Balances
--------------------
                       0

This does not look correct. Shouldn't cash be $50,000? Why does it say
$130,000 (original buying price)?

Option 2 in journal:
2018-07-01 * My Holdings
    Assets:Chequing 0.00 CAD
    Assets:Holdings:Stocks:TICKER 4000 TICKER @ 10.00 CAD
    Assets:Holdings:Stocks:TICKER 6000 TICKER @ 15.00 CAD
    Assets:Holdings:Cash 0.00 CAD
    Income:Capital Gains 0.00 CAD
    Equity:Opening Balances

; 2018-09-19 Stock Sell - TICKER
; Assets:Holdings:TICKER -4000 TICKER {10.00 CAD} @
5.00 CAD
; Assets:Holdings:TICKER -6000 TICKER {15.00 CAD} @
5.00 CAD
; Assets:Holdings:Cash

2018-09-19 Stock Sell - TICKER
    Assets:Holdings:TICKER -10000 TICKER @ 5 CAD
    Assets:CA:Holdings:Cash

$ ledger -f ~/tmp/holdings.dat bal

      50000.00 CAD Assets
        50000.00 CAD CA:Holdings:Cash
                   0 Holdings
        10000 TICKER Stocks:TICKER
       -10000 TICKER TICKER
      -130000.00 CAD Equity:Opening Balances
--------------------
       -80000.00 CAD

This definitely looks more correct with a Loss of $80,000 reflected in the
balance. However, I am not sure how to get that number into a capital
gains account and have the balance showing 0.

Apologise for the potentially silly question but I have tried a lot of
different permutations and combinations and cannot seem to figure out this
issue.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
