We've seen lots of issues with Excel opening spreadsheets saved by 
OpenOffice/LibreOffice -- no doubt because it's the same library 
generating the files!

I'm all for dropping XLS and putting that time elsewhere...

Regarding a more generic XML format, these could easily be generated by 
the web services ;-)
