I think that the hierarchical accounts for which I placed a feature request
would do what you want.  Example inventory accounts:


Feed
  Grain
    Corn
    Oats
  Hay
    Round Bales
    Square Bales

Example sales tax accounts:

Sales Tax
  State Sales Tax
    Wisconsin
  County Sales Tax
    Pierce
    Dunn
