Why not use pgpool-ii over a simple p2p OpenVPN link between your two servers? Or, if you don't like OpenVPN (what's not to like?), the tunnel option with port forwarding under SSH will do approximately the same thing, although OpenVPN is more automatic. By the way: this is the LedgerSMB list, not the SQL-Ledger list (you specified "SL" above).
