I dont think the invites were seeded to the public - they went out to tech journalists and the major papers in the states so they could get on and review Google+ as soon as it landed, and relied on them inviting their mates and it propagating down to the masses. Apparently there are >20M on there already. How many use it regularly though, I dont know.
