Playing Forest under the lights takes me back to one of the great nights of my life.
1969. We had just won the league for the first time in our history with a brilliant 0-0 draw at Anfield, and we had one game left v Forest at home. I think the Anfield game was on the Monday and the Forest game just 2 days later (that's how they did things in those days).........although we were already champions, 2 (yes,2!) points for a win against Forest would give us a record number of points in a season. And we did it, thanks to a goal by Johnny Giles, and I was there to see it. I vaguely recall the goal............I think it was an awkward cross from the left which Giles managed to bring down in a crowded box and then hit on the half volley into the top left hand corner.........I ought to know because I had a picture of him scoring it cut out from the YP in my scrapbook and I must have looked at it a thousand times. (Youngsters.........that's what we did before the internet came along!) After the game, the team paraded the trophy around a jam-packed Elland Road. It was a pretty crap game, but a fantastic night! Were any other listers there that night? P.S. I think that record still holds as the highest total until they brought in 3 pts for a win. P.P.S. Or perhaps it doesn't............now I come to think of it I seem to remember getting very cross when it was beaten........possibly by Clough's Forest, ironically. _______________________________________________ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org MARCHING ON TOGETHER
