Folks, One of the very great nights! One of those games that will be forever remembered for the lows and then (transitory) highs of following a team like Leeds United. 2-0 down at HT after conceding a gut-wrenching second goal 10 minutes into injury time. Losing half a team to injury in the process including, heart breakingly, Bam Bam who was just back from a long-termer too. We were almost down and out! He was crying and wasn’t the only one. The Norwich result was turning to dust before our eyes. We were really screwed. I missed the second goal as I was in transit into Galway after half 10 to collect a child from the pub. Another good friend had turned off his telly at half time (9PM) not to turn it on again…well not quite. I got to my friend’s house near the Galway Clinic just as the Wolves chap was sent off for nearly killing Meslier a few minutes into the second half. What people forget is that this chap could have been sent off on a straight red for his first offence – studs up etc. – so he only needed to sneeze on someone to get a second one. This is something that people who don’t have the referee gene always forget to factor into calculations. After that, the game magically turned. I really like Jamie Carragher as a co-commentator. He has a bit of a grá for Leeds United, unlike that otherarticle, Jim Beglin. He even mentioned ‘Marching on Together’ near the end of the game. There were different tears in my eyes at that stage. Could you envisage Beglin ever saying something decent and nice about Leeds United? Nope! Beglin must come be dirt cheap as there can be no other reason he covers so many Leeds United games. We get a goal. Neither my friend nor I move a muscle. We’ve seen this sort of ‘comeback’ before. Ten versus eleven – we will somehow shoot ourselves in the foot again. No point getting excited. We get another goal. We shout the house down. We can get something here, we both thought! I called my other friend at this stage to tell him that he’d better turn on the telly again. He did, grudgingly. Things then go quiet. Ayling alluded to that in his excellent post-game interview. Wolves didn’t do much, neither did we. We then get the winning goal a minute into injury time after a comedy of errors that is usually only seen in the Leeds United box. We just hugged each other, something I don’t recall us ever doing in the 30 years we have known each other, our first game together was April 1992, the Cantona special against Chelsea in the championship-winning season. Many ups and downs since! There is a White God! We might even survive! James. _______________________________________________ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: https://mailman.gn.apc.org/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org
