If I was Blackwell's boss I would tell him to shut it. It doesn't take
a brainiac to work out that the alleged hate mail he has been receiving
is an irrelevancy. He should have his mind firmly fixed on the job in
hand and nothing else. He should be told that this is what he is paid
for, not whining in the toady press about something that he should
accept as being part of the job. Nothing more nothing less. He should
also be told that he is naive if he thinks that the press are interested
in this story because they care about him and his family. What they
really care about is the continuing desire to portray the average Leeds
United supporter as a knuckle dragging moron. And threatening to leave
as a result of this minor incident suggests a lack of moral courage on
his part. He may be preparing the way for a rebuttal if he does get the
push in the near future.
Having said all that he has taken on the poison chalice with Leeds, but
surely someone who shows that they can a) recognise that and b) deal
with it successfully has done themselves a great favour. He would rise
several points in my esteem if this was demonstrably the case, however I
see a major flaw in Blackwell's character emerging. In some respects he
has that same flaw that haunted Ridsdale when everyone turned against
him. He should learn from others mistakes. If he is secure in his
self-belief and abilities he should stand by them and not look for
scapegoats.
Recent results suggest to me that there is a major problem within the
playing side at ER not just amongst the players but (more likely)
amongst those reponsible for their on field management. The playoffs
although a certain event are not certain in their outcome. Just look at
the recent form of the other combatants. For my money Watford (with all
their troubles too) are the real threat as I believe they will rise to
the occasion. Why does the spectre of a certain League Cup final haunt
me so?
Having said all that how would I have felt if we were now in 8th place
and no chance of the playoffs. Funnily enough this would have filled my
expectations in a far more suitable manner. I don't feel I am alone in
this either, attendances at ER at this stage (of what could have been an
enormous come back season) bear this out. Surely if we had a club really
in tune with its support and looking to its long term future it would be
doing everything in its power to ensure that it maximised its support
for at least the run in to what might have been promotion. The 12th man
etc..
Instead we have the bizarre mishandling of relations with the supporters
club, empty seats, pricing that alienates ordinary fans, no new
investment and no feel good factor about what is in fact a far better
season than most of us could have realistically even dreamed of.

PS Forgot about the hand driers, which after all are really only so much
hot air!
