Your analysis is very good, but you are missing one major factor
out...DETERRENCE.
I don't agree. Lehman wasn't deterred. He didn't know that they were going
to put the ball in the net. I don't see any keeper thinking I'll bring him
down but so long as they score I won't get sent off.
The ref is responsible not only for dealing with any incident suitably with
ref to that particular game, but also giving a message to players as to
what will happen in the future if they do x y or z.
It isn't much of a warning when he has already sent a player off and
unbalanced the game. It is already done. Letting the goal stand and issuing
a yellow card would have been perfectly adequate in the context of this
match.
What if [insert name of Watford keeper here] brings down Hulsey like that
on Sunday...............will any lister be sayiing "Ooh I hope he doesn't
get a red card because it will ruin the game as a spectacle"? No, I thought
not.
The fact that opposition fans will delight in anything that makes it more
likely that their side is going to win is true but it isn't much of an
argument. The fact that I would be delighted to see the Watford keeper sent
off in this particular game will not make it right. I wouldn't want to see
him sent off and the goal disallowed anyway.
