There's another key member of the team missing too - the top-order
power-hitter, Trescothick.

I think the selectors made a mistake in not sticking with Mal Loye. He's not
in Trescothick's class, but was the only available alternative. Instead
we've got four similar players to choose from - Vaughan, Bell, Joyce and
Strauss.

As ever, the ECB selectors don't seem to be on top of the needs of one-day
cricket.

Agree about Cook as future captain, but it's too soon right now - especially
as he'd have to captain the one-day side too, and isn't considered for the
squad.

Vaughan, as you say, is trying to sort out his batting - at times yesterday
he looked on good form. And he's stayed fit, which is a real bonus. A Decision
has to be made soon - next Ashes is 2009, and ideally he'd be captain for
that. Can Vaughan be kept in one piece until September 2009? If not, when do
you make the change?

Strauss is uninspiring, Flintoff immature, Cook not ready.

Why not Pietersen as captain? He's going to be first nae on the teamsheet
for the next decade, and the responsibility might take the edge off his
arrogance...
