All this indicates is that you haven't read Broken Dreams by Tom Bower. This bit is on page 132 (paperback version 2003). What happens next ?- you will have to read pages 133-135. It includes Bates again winning the gratitude of the fans. It also explains that cartoon in The Mail on Sunday (6th May 2007) showing Bates in a Roman Charriot which is in Leeds Colours.
