Leeds sign with Met

Wednesday, 01 August 2007.

Leeds Metropolitan University has become the official education partner
of Leeds United Ladies FC – the first partnership of its kind between a
university and a National Women’s Premier League club.

The partnership will provide placement opportunities for Leeds Met
students and staff in areas including fitness and coaching, Marketing
and PR, events management and sports journalism.

Leeds United Ladies FC will benefit from Leeds Met’s world-class
coaching and sports science facilities, as well as the university’s
experts in a variety of fields, including sports performance, from Leeds
Met’s Carnegie Faculty of Sport and Education. Leeds Met will also
provide administrative support at board level to the club.

The Vice-Chancellor of Leeds Met, Professor Simon Lee and chairperson of
Leeds United Ladies Melanie Vauvelle, signed the formal partnership
agreement at the university’s Headingley Campus in front of a large
array of local and national media.

England International and top Leeds United Ladies player Sue Smith will
act as a ‘Carnegie champion’ for the University and will work closely
with Leeds Met continuing the community work the club does locally, and
supporting its flourishing youth development programme.

The partnership will provide additional opportunities for Leeds Met
students who currently play for the university’s women’s football team
and a new Leeds United scholarship programme will be developed. As part
of the new partnership, the club’s development team will be known as
Leeds Carnegie development team and will wear Leeds Carnegie on their
shirts.

Leeds United Ladies recently announced the signing of England’s Carly
Telford and Steph Houghton who won the prestigious ‘Young Player of the
Year’ award at the recent FA Awards, as well as England U23 players
Nicola Hobbs from Lincoln and midfielder Katie Holtham.

Chairperson Melanie Vauvelle explained the new partnership in greater
detail at the press launch. “The benefits to Leeds United Ladies are
vast. Not only does it help secure our future for the next five years
but it also assists and supports Leeds United Ladies in making the next
step up. Our ambition is to continue to strive to improve and develop
further as a club until Arsenal no longer win every trophy…!

“The partnership will help us attract, through Leeds United Ladies
scholarships, more of the best women footballers, not only in the UK but
Europe and beyond."
