Aside from the petty wind-up merchant that Runt was/is, the only thing that
ever impressed me about his footballing ability was how he used to be able to
take corners without a run-up i.e. he sort of chipped them from the corner.
Otherwise, he was pretty ordinary as a footballer, and his Ingerland
appearances tell you more about the state of English football at the time than
Runts ability. Batty had an honesty about him that sets him apart from many.
Many didn't like him for it, but he always struck me as a nice bloke whenever I
met him/lurked in his presence.
