Many years ago, when I was a referee in local football, there was a bloke called Devaney, I can't remember his first name, who was a well known nutter. He'd played professionally with Bradford City for a short time but was so indisciplined he was always getting into fights and getting sent off so they dumped him. He was the same in his private life, always in trouble with the police. He had returned to playing in local football and was always the subject of conversation at referees' meetings. They were always on about the first time he stepped out of line he'd be off and they weren't going to stand any nonsense from him and all that. Poor bugger was on a hiding to nothing before he'd even kicked the ball. I think we're suffering from this syndrome a bit. We're a big fish in a small pond and the referees on their way up are keen to show that they can deal with the big boys as well as the minnows and that they won't be intimidated by our large crowds (at home) or our stellar status (away). It's something we're going to have to live with until we reach our rightful position in football's hierarchy.
