The Ulster Defence Association (UDA) is a _loyalist_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulster_loyalism) _paramilitary_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paramilitary) organization in _Northern Ireland_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Ireland) , outlawed as a _terrorist group_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrorist_group) in the _United Kingdom_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom) and _Republic of Ireland_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Ireland) , and which claims its aim is to defend the loyalist community from _Republican_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_republican) _terrorism_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrorism) . Its main objective has been to reject Northern Irish amalgamation with the Republic of Ireland seeking to do so through either Ulster independence or maintenance of the Act of Union. Its military branch has operated under the name Ulster Freedom Fighters (UFF). Its terrorist activities, which have included attacks against civilians as well as members of the _Provisional Irish Republican Army_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provisional_Irish_Republican_Army) , were originally intended by the UDA as retaliatory acts for Irish Republican violence against Protestants in Northern Ireland.
