After the away game on way back to city centre some fat fan of theirs told me
we are the worst team he had seen at their place all season and last and that
we did not deserve to win - well the fat b*****d will be having a heart attack
if he was there today !!
That is not to say that we did not, just about, deserve to win, cos we
probably did, but to score such a fluke goal with minutes to go must be hard to
take for them.
It was not a great game by any stretch - Thommo and Howson in centre mid and
Tres restored up front , in place of Douglas, Kisi and Constantine (these two
on bench)
First half was poor - they had a couple of half chances one where Casper came
out and saved at strikers feet in a one-on-one situation - shows 3rd Div
strikers are mainly crap.
We had two bits of quality from Becks one turn and shot and one mazy run and
shot which brought off a couple of decent saves and he hit the bar to show for
45 mins of huff and puff.
In fact I got a text off son (he in SS today) at half time to say best bit so
far was seeing the bozz eyed steward fall down some steps pre match !
Half time entertainment was 3 tenors singing Nessum Dorma and some Westlife
song !! (may as well mention stuff like that cos nowt on the pitch to talk
about)
Second half continued in much the same way until DW, as usual, decided not to
settle for what we had and made a double substitution bringing on Carole and
Flo and subbing Joanne and Martha (oops - I mean Prutts and Westie ) and going
4 3 3 . Worked a treat - Seb was on fire, Thommo sat a bit deeper pulling the
strings and we suddenly were able to pass the ball and create real chances -
two great balls by Thommo made good chances for Becks and Tres but both were
wasted. We had a few other near misses and just as we thought it was not going
to happen, a shot hit Carole,then a defender and trickled and inched its way
somehow across the line - we all looked to lino and ref expecting something to
be wrong but no it was a goal !! Cue pandemonium in the 28,000 crowd !
Announcer gave goal to Howson and to be honest none of us were sure quite
what had happened. Bristol players who had come for a point and almost deserved
it for the effort they put in were on their knees devastated - I am sure if
they play like that every week they would not have dropped down the league like
they have - another team playing in its cup final (well supported by 2,500 who
made the long journey - bet they don't take that many very often!)
We played a bit of excellent keep ball with Kisi being brought on to waste
time and kept all 3 points.
Yes the goal was lucky, yes we have had a lot of luck this season BUT you
make your own luck in this game, and our never say die attitude and our
willingness to fight and keep going to the end plus Dens subsitutions, is
getting the rewards it deserves.
One final word on game - we will miss Rui big style when he goes - he was
immense at times today - he gets us out of trouble lots of times with his pace
and awareness.
So another 3 points and much needed, with two tough away games coming up
(missing Hartlepool with there being no trains)
Watched the match sober for a change (hence the early report) and must say I
don't like it one bit. A 5 hour train journey to Swansea should be long enough
to get blitzed !!
