One thing I notice is that Billy was actually barged into an offside
position by a defender.

True, of course, but the other point is that neither the ref nor the
linesman initially disallowed the goal for offside. My recollection,
standing behind the goal and always refusing to celebrate a goal until I
was sure the ref had given it (a habit ingrained in me from Lorimer's
disallowed freekick in the FA Cup sf back in 67).......was that the
linesman kept his flag down and ran back to the halfway line (ie he felt
it was a good goal), the ref also turned and ran back towards the centre
spot. But on the way, he ran past Beckenbastard, who appeared to speak
a few words to him. Then he turned round, ran back towards the box
blowing his whistle, and pointed vaguely for a freekick which was
eventually taken yards away from where Billy was allegedly "offside."

The whole thing stank to high heaven.
