I used to like the one at Oakwood Clock until it featured on the front of a small business services promotion leaflet produced by the high street bank I worked for at the time. They then got ideas above their station. They only got featured because of the architectural merits of their window, nowt to do with the fish'n'chips. Good one I went to was down one of the back streets off Roundhay Road, near where Grandways used to be. Whale and chips for £2!
My personal favourite was Greasy Joes on Austhorpe Road near the entrance to the Arndale. We always had fish'n'chips from there as my dad picked them up on the way home from a day's boozing while working for British Rail. He used to leave at 7 on a Thursday morning, collect his wage packet at 11, head for the pub and be booked in for a 12 hour shift by a mate - no wonder he ended up on the NUR's National Executive! I used to frequent Greasy Joe's on a Monday night on my way back from The Brown Cow at Whitkirk. That was a long time before it became The Brown Cow & Dragon (serving Thai food) and had a feckin Travelodge built in the car park!
