Well last week v Forest we were a goal down and got a late equaliser and the
exact same thing happened yesterday - BUT that is where the similarities
end.Against Forest a full house really got behind the team in a free flowing
match which gave us some decent football that led us to think the slump would
soon be over - against Crewe a half full crowd got on the teams back and saw a
disjointed game where all the brisk passing came from the opposition. Once
again a side at the wrong end of the division have been made to look far
superior to us - anyone watching this game would have thought they were the
team with the second highest points total in the Division and we were the ones
struggling against relegation.
The wheels have well and truly come off and it is hard to see how we can get
back on track (apologies for any mixed metaphors there !) I read in LLL that
Bradley Johnson was the 18th player making his debut and since then Sheehan,
Elding and - depending on your point of view - Michalik can be added, that is
almost two full teams making a debut. I am not sure how many players have
turned out for us this year but it must be approaching 30. It means there is no
consistency in personnel or approach and it shows out on the pitch.
Even those who have played every week have been shifted position wise (Hughes
anyone?) and this continued yesterday with stalwarts Prutton and Richardson
both being used in new positions. Liverpool have showed that even top level
players cannot cope very well with squad rotation and ours are a long way off
being top level !!
Yesterday we missed Beckford as we knew we would, Flo proved he cannot do
90mins and any use to us is as an impact sub. Sheehan and Sweeney are a long
way off being good and Lubo has turned into Kishisev - great last year and a
shadow of himself so far this.
The crowd yesterday were appalling - a number of fans near me spent the whole
game abusing Sweeney (not sure what he has done to attract it) and towards the
end I even heard chants of F.Off Kandol !!! Disgraceful. The team were booed
off both at half time and at full time so it is no wonder that they are
beginning to play without confidence.
To my mind it was the desertion of Poyet that started the rot - until then
the 15 points had galvanised and united the club both on and off the pitch but
Poyet proved that all this "we are in it together" was just bluster - we are in
it together till a better offer come in would be a more truthful tag line. Wise
deserting too just meant that all team spirit and team ethic has been destroyed.
Things can only get worse !!!!
Dave
