Aye John and a mate of mine and fellow ST holder at Leeds (who has seen his fair share of "life" following Leeds home and away and in Europe) had some right horror stories to tell of that Wednesday and Thursday in Manchester: - he had to send some of his staff home early Wed; one lad who works there was out in his dinner break in the town centre when some Rangers noticed and set about him - the reason being he was wearing a pink shirt - this these "fans" loudly proclaimed, of course, indicated that he was gay; a young woman out on her dinner break was "picked up and run off with" (as in, grabbed and thrown over the shoulder of some body) against her will and was left terrified - it was impossible to walk across Piccadilly the next morning without walking on broken glass - bus/tram shelters, bottles, windows - it was everywhere - on his 5 minute walk from bus-stop to office he had to dodge 2 large turds, pools of urine and a pair of soiled boxer shorts - he was in an Irish pub that night that had "to look shut" - curtains drawn, lights off, door barred - because the landlord had received threats - another Irish pub did apparently get part-trashed by some "visitors" - some tram and train services were rendered inoperable (I don't know how - the story I heard was that in some cases gangs of blokes were just stood in front of them and wouldn't move) - one woman at work had taken her elderly mum to the ballet as a birthday treat - when they came out they couldn't get a tram, they weren't running, and the old dear was apparently in a right state seeing the "fans" charging around getting up to all sorts - they eventually got a cab. - there was apparently monstrous drunkeness - blokes with 3 or 4 bottles of vodka tucked under their arms - boxes of 24 bottles of beer being carted around - folk who couldn't stand up at like 1 in the afternoon on Wed (there were still some of these around on the Thursday at 6pm when I arrived into Piccadilly). In short it was carnage and some of it had a really nasty edge to it. Remember most of this is from a travel hardened Leeds supporter.

The queue for the train out the city was 3 hours long and when my mates boarded it broke down after 1 stop. No one got a bite to eat all day as everything had ran out 8 hours before kick off. Nobody got a drink as the bar was drunk dry 7 hours before kick off. The screen wasn't hooked up to the live link so all they got to see was highlights of the zenit v bayern semi final. and funniest of all the only way to see the game was too stand with 200 others in some poor guys garden watching his tv through the window... ------------------------------------ _______________________________________________ the Leeds List is an unmoderated mailing list and the list administrators accept no liability for the personal views and opinions of contributors.
