knock it off Rob, and all the rest who joined in. Dr mike you should
know better.
there's nowt wrong as such with the welsh or wales. sure there's
things that get made fun of, can irritate but that's the same
everywhere, and this includes gods own count(r)y, and us yorkies.
to go and blame a whole counry and its people for the sins and
failings of a few, of an orhanization, is ott and sacks of certain
unsavoury attitudes. and wehat has the wembley roof got to do
with the welsh? (i know it wasn't rob made the reponse to that).
as to the national athem being sung and comment on abide with
me, well abide with me was sung, and lesley grantham (a good
yorkshire lass) really belted it out with gusto. the national anthem
has always been sung after abide with me me (well for a very
long time and remember the first abide with me was at the 1927
final when, er, cardiff played). and i personally thought it a nice
gesture to sing land of my fathers as well.
if you really want to talk abouth cultural and ethnic groups then
how about being serious? I am amazed that no one here has
mentioned the research by bath universtity on regional acccents
presented to the British Psychological Society´s annual meeting
in Dublin some six weeks ago, and was widely reported in the
media.
For anyone who didn't see it was a study into dialect and perceived
intelligence to see if the stigma attached to regional accents has
diminished. Received pronunciation, the accent of royalty and public
school alumni, has fallen from its leading role for the first time.
Worst whre brummies - It found that people with the distinctive nasal
tones of the Birmingham region are considered far less intelligent than
those with other accents, despite a general trend in which regional
dialects have become more respectable.
And what was top? The accent most strongly associated with wisdom
and intellect? Why the Yorkshire accent with an intelligence score
of 6.71 out of 10. Next was RP, at 6.67, followed by silence with 5.99.
Last was the Birmingham accent, with a score of 5.6.
A similar association between accent and attractiveness was found.
Why didn't I post anything? Well when it came out I was in Belfast
and using webmail and didn't have much time to read list mail, never
mind post. By the time i got back and (partly) caught up with mail
i was of again, this time to Cardiff.
May the celtic fringes continue in all their glory !
