On the plus side, what you see is what you get and he isn't going to live
forever.
We all know (and grudgingly accept) that he is not doing this for the good
of the club but to line his own pockets and has shafted those that provided
a valuable service to the club (St Johns, etc) but it is fair to say that we
have benefited from his dealings. Under somebody else's stewardship we may
have gone tits up never to be seen again.
Whilst he may be a bastard he is still 'OUR' bastard and should be
'supported' when he has to deal with bastards that run other clubs.
I would rather have Bates in charge than be a club like chelsea who, should
Abramovich get bored, will be stuck far further up the creak than we ever
were.
I think that it is fair to say that the majority of the clubs in the PL are
in some way 'mortgaged' to the hilt either through a consortium or via a
series of loans a la chelsea. Should the sponsorship or TV revenues dry up a
lot of these clubs will struggle.
Who knows, when Bates finally decides to call it a day we can hope that he
copies the model that was used at Wolves a few years ago, ie, buy the club
from the owner for 10 quid (or whatever the punitive sum was) with a clause
saying that you have to plow £10 million into the club.
As they say, the grass isn't always greener.
