Well in the end we made hard work of what should have been a comfortable
victory. First half we totally dominated and should have been 3 or even 4 goals
up. In the event it was one nil - a long cross from Douglas went into the six
yard box and Becchio got in front of the keeper and the ball bounced to Howson
about a yard out and he bundled it over the line with only 10 mins gone.
After that Dickinson came close on two occasions, one hitting the woodwork.
Naylor, I think, caused an almighty scramble in their box and twice the ball
was hacked off the line. A few long shots also threatened and apart from a
couple of breaks they had nothing to offer.
We hoped for more of the same second half but it did not happen.Becchio went
off 10mins into the half and was replaced by Robinson and although Robinson was
possibly man of the match whilst he was on the pitch (one run which ended with
him scraping the bar was especially good) his inclusion did upset the balance
of the team and we struggled for any sort of rhythm and cohesion giving the
ball away and not quite finding the right pass.
Whilst we never really looked like losing our lead there were plenty of nerves
in the crowd and this showed itself in some disgraceful barracking of Dickinson
by sections of the crowd - coupled with the awful USA chants - a chant I hate
at the best of times and when used as an insult against a player on the pitch
it is almost beyond belief.
By all means come on here and on web sites and criticise a players ability,
fair enough if you dislike a player tell your mates in pub discussions and the
like, but for goodness sake we are supposed to be "supporters" of Leeds United
not barrackers !!
Dickinsons record at a higher level shows he must have something (4 in 5 games
for Blackpool) , and Grayson a manager who we all seem to rate, values him: so
who are those idiots to give him grief after the equivalent of 3 matches on the
pitch starting when he had not played proper football for ages after a spell of
bench warming and injury ?
It is just so annoying and to make it worse it is so counter productive -
depending on the fitness of Beckford and Becchio we may have to start with
Dickinson again on Monday at Leicester a difficult game without having a centre
forward with his confidence at rock bottom. !!!
Anyway it is a case of onwards and upwards - 9 wins on the trot at home and the
last 4 without conceding. Yesterdays results make for some interesting matches
over the next week - if Leicester beat us they could be promoted tomorrow if
MKDons lose, and then the Tranmere game next Saturday could be the one that
cements our play off place or puts it in real jeopardy !!
