Hoggard rips into Somerset in vintage display

IT is commonly held that the best way to get Steve Harmison firing on all cylinders is to give the Durham pace bowler as much work as possible. Now we know what makes Matthew Hoggard tick – leave him stewing on the sidelines for over a month and then sit back and watch as he unleashes his frustration.

That was the way of it at Headingley Carnegie yesterday as Hoggard ripped through the Somerset top-order with the air of a man with a point to prove.

To say that the former England pace man has been disgruntled at being overlooked for Yorkshire's Friends Provident Trophy and Twenty20 Cup campaigns is an understatement.

But 34 days after his last appearance for Yorkshire, Hoggard took 5-56 to help the club into a promising position against Somerset and thereby prove he has lost none of his pride and passion.

It was only two weeks ago that Hoggard, 32, revealed he is biding his time before agreeing a new contract at Headingley because he wants to keep his options open.

The crux of the matter is that Hoggard wants to stay at Yorkshire, the club want to keep him, but the player would consider leaving once his contract expires in September if – in Hoggard's words – "I wasn't getting any work up here".

Yorkshire, for their part, are not going to jump through hoops to retain a high-earner who faces a stiff task to get back into their one-day team, and yet many more performances like this can only ensure Hoggard finds plenty of work at Yorkshire for the foreseeable future – in Championship cricket at least.

This was vintage Hoggard.

Beneath the milky sunshine and before a good-sized crowd, he was immediately into his stride after Yorkshire lost their last two first-innings wickets inside the opening 15 minutes of the second day to finish on a disappointing 277.

Hoggard had Marcus Trescothick caught behind on the drive from the fourth ball of the innings – when these teams met in the Championship at Scarborough last year, Hoggard removed his former England colleague with the first ball of the match – and from his sixth delivery he also had Justin Langer caught behind.

When you are playing Somerset it does not get any better than to remove Trescothick and Langer inside the opening over, and as Hoggard accepted the acclaim of the crowd, a scoreboard of 0-2 evoked the day a certain FS Trueman helped reduce the Indians to 0-4 on his Test debut here in 1952.

But Hoggard was not done.

He had James Hildreth caught at third slip by Anthony McGrath and then reduced Somerset to 30-4 when Zander de Bruyn played all round one that pinned him in front.

Arul Suppiah and Craig Kieswetter lifted Somerset to a still-groggy 79-4 at lunch but Suppiah went in the first over after the interval, leg-before to the left-arm spinner David Wainwright.

Kieswetter was a class apart and almost single-handedly kept Somerset in the game as he timed the ball sweetly to all corners.

But the South African lost another ally in Peter Trego when Hoggard claimed his fifth wicket courtesy of an outstanding one-handed catch at second slip by Andrew Gale, and then Kieswetter himself perished when he flashed outside off-stump and was caught behind off Ajmal Shahzad.

Kieswetter's 83, made from 131 balls with 11 fours, confirmed his status as a wicketkeeper batsman of the highest potential.

Less impressive, however, was the way he failed to acknowledge the crowd as he left the field – no matter how disappointed a player might be, he should always recognise the applause of the paying public.

After Kieswetter's fine innings, Alfonso Thomas assumed the task of trying to get Somerset up to somewhere near Yorkshire's first-innings score.

He added 66 for the eighth-wicket with former Yorkshire bowler David Stiff, who contributed a career-best 28, and then accelerated as wickets tumbled to finish unbeaten on 64 from 139 deliveries.

Wainwright removed Stiff and Michael Munday with the aid of slip catches by McGrath before Shahzad ended the innings on 230 by bowling Charl Willoughby.

Yorkshire were moving along nicely in their second innings before Jacques Rudolph played a loose shot at Willoughby and was spectacularly caught at point by Trego.

The day ended with Hoggard doing something else he does well, knuckling down in the role of night-watchman, as Yorkshire closed on 26-1, a lead of 73.
